Work Smarter, Not Harder: Ways to Optimize Your Time and Care for Yourself

How to navigate the world of multitasking and prioritize self-care.

In a world of overstimulation, iPhones, and constant distractions, “business” is often worn as a badge of honor. We live in a multitasking world where our attention is pulled in a million different directions at once. How can we optimize our time and work smarter? It’s not necessarily about working harder or longer. We can still get our tasks done while caring for ourselves and understanding how to optimize our time and more importantly, our energy. Here, we’ll discuss some simple ways to care for yourself while optimizing your time. Learn to work smarter, not harder, and reap the myriad benefits.

Take an Inventory of Your Time

This is step one. Pick a day and take an honest evaluation of how you’re spending your time. This way, you can become aware of your practices and adjust accordingly. It’s better to be in the know.

Take Breaks and Spend Time in Nature

This sounds counterintuitive. However, when we’re inundated with information all day long, our brains tend to get overloaded. We can’t work efficiently and sharply when we’re running on empty. Studies have shown that the brain works best in 90-minute intervals. If you can, try to schedule in breaks throughout the day of 15-20 minutes. You can use this time to get out in nature, walk around the neighborhood, or simply look out the window. Nature has a way of refreshing and resetting us.

Take Naps

Napping actually helps us work smarter. Schedule a 15-20 minute power nap in the middle of the day and watch your brain reset and feel better. When we nap, we’re more able to assimilate new information. Don’t underestimate the power of sleep.

Evaluate How You Use Your Phone

Spending lots of time scrolling through social media sites or checking email every 10-minutes are energetically draining. Evaluate how and when you’re using your phone and try to schedule phone time into your day. You’ll probably get a lot more done.
