The Brilliance Of Stillness

At Tree House, we talk a lot about activity. Some of the main focuses of our men’s treatment programs are on physical fitness, physical training, yoga, outdoor activities, and adventure. We emphasize the necessity of doing and going as ways to detox, heal, and train the body. Men have to learn how to build and maintain the machine which is their physical body. Men also have to learn how to have fun, be spontaneous, face life’s challenges, work together as a team, and experience the world. What we don’t talk about often enough is the need to do absolutely nothing, but meditate. Sitting in stillness is in an incredibly important tool for men in recovery to develop because it gives them necessary space for silence, reflection, learning, and growth.

Spending time in nature is the perfect example of why we need moments of stillness and silence in our lives. Men who come to Tree House might be adventuring for the first time in their lives. It is not uncommon for men to need some time to adjust to the wild silence that is nature when they are accustomed to the noise pollution of more urban living. Men often experience hearing ringing in their ears or general noise as their minds try to compensate for the lack of sound stimulus. The moment men become aware that the sounds are coming from them, and not what surrounds them, something changes. Quickly, the sound dissipates and men are left to the silence of nature. Overcome by the monumental difference, men realize how little they have an opportunity to be immersed in such stillness. In that moment, stillness becomes a brilliant piece of gold in their lives. Stillness in nature is permeating, life-changing, and eye-opening. Learning to practice stillness in everyday life through meditation replicates those powerful moments and provides equally as powerful benefits.

Spiritual thought leader and best selling author Eckhart Tolle wrote, “In the stillness of your presence, you can feel your own formless and timeless reality as the unmanifested life that animates your physical form.” Stillness connects men to the true nature of themselves, and to the true nature of others in the world around them. “You can then feel the same life deep within every other human and every other creature. You look beyond the veil of form and separation. This is the realization of oneness,” he says, “This is love.”
