Resolve vs. Evolve

Resolve vs. Evolve

In theory, New Year’s resolutions are a great way to promise ourselves that we’re going to do something better next year. Whether that “something” is losing weight, getting more rest, or making a million dollars, we often feel good about our commitment when we’re making it. Unfortunately, many of us can’t always follow through the way we want to, and we often end up making the same resolutions the very next year.

There’s a way to break this vicious cycle, and as men in recovery, it’s perhaps one of the very best ways to make the most of this holiday season. Instead of making many idle resolutions, we can resolve to do just one thing in 2019: evolve in our recovery.

Addiction recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and one of the best ways we can make sure we continue to grow throughout our particular recovery journey is to make plans to better ourselves little by little. In treatment, we learn the importance of sustainability. Practicing methods to become better people who learn to manage our addiction a little more each day ensures that we’re always progressing, and never biting off more than we can chew.

We can and should take these same methods right into post-treatment recovery, by setting realistic goals that will help us evolve as human beings this coming year. Let’s ask ourselves– what is it we can do differently in 2019 that will put us in a better position than we were last year?

For some of us, that answer may be as simple as communicating more, or spending more time exercising or eating right. For others, we may need to get more plugged into our post-treatment support group or reach back out to the recovery community for ways to get involved.

The new year is a great way to set realistic and sustainable goals for ourselves, our relationships, and our mindsets. Let’s evolve this year.
