It is easy to forget that California is a big place. Beyond the iconic coastline and outside of the famous National Parks, there are thousands upon thousands of miles of beautiful nature and land. During the fall season, attention is drawn to areas away from the coast where mountains and forests burst into color. California isn’t all coast, which means there are plenty of places to see photo worthy fall foliage throughout the Golden State.
Northern California
June Lake is one of the more infamous areas for fall color in California. Located near Mammoth Lakes, another fall foliage hot spot, June Lake is surround by Alpine trees which burst into bright yellows, as well as willows, during the fall. Drive down to Lake Tahoe to witness more auburn, orange, and reds among the oaks, willows, and aspens in all of the meadows and hillsides surrounding the area. To cross a National Park off your list, turn toward Yosemite National Park where the already breathtaking views are complimented by brilliant fall foliage coming from maples and dogwood trees.
Southern California
Southern California residents don’t have to drive far to find fall foliage. Hidden in eastern San Diego county is an autumnal wonderland nestled in the small town of Julian and neighboring Palomar Mountain. Julian is well known for its apples and apple products, making fall the perfect time to visit. Schedule a day of apple picking, cider-sampling, and world-famous pie-eating while taking in the beautiful fall foliage surrounding the small town. You can access Julian by way of Palomar Mountain and sacrifice only a small detour to explore some of Palomar’s wilderness trails. Orange county residents can also hop over to LA County for a quick trip to Oak Glen, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles. Similar to Julian, Oak Glen offers oaks, apples, berries, and a nostalgic sense of a western town country vibe. Oaks, maples, and other colorful trees surround the area offering visitors a colorful delight.
Suburban Areas
Throughout the state, neighborhoods and suburban areas have taken it upon themselves to plant color changing trees. Though the landscape isn’t necessarily wild, for those who can’t make an epic trip, there are still epic color changing leaves to be found nearby. Spend time scoping out local neighborhoods and research where the best colors are to be seen.
