Laughter: The Best Medicine

Laughter: The Best Medicine

There’s a reason that we say laughter is the best medicine. We know that we always feel better when we’re laughing. It’s one of the simplest ways to feel better, have fun, and get in touch with that childlike joy that we tend to stray from as we settle into adulthood. Recovery is a wonderful time to get back in touch with having simple and joyful fun. It’s always a good idea to laugh more — whether that’s through funny movies, hanging out with your most hilarious friends in recovery, or simply not taking yourself so seriously. It’s easy to find humor in life. We just have to look. In case you’re wondering why laughter is indeed the best medicine, here are some concrete reasons to laugh as often as you can.

Laughter reduces depression. Oftentimes when we’re able to laugh at something, we can feel renewed and see the situation in a different light. Laughter can act as a reset button and can reduce overall feelings of darkness and depression. Laughter also reduces pain, boosts immunity, and reduces stress. Laughing increases endorphins, allowing us to feel more relaxed and happier. Laughter also increases our overall resilience, which is vital in recovery and beyond. When we laugh regularly, we are able to take things in stride and accept life on life’s terms, as they say. You don’t need an excuse to laugh. You can laugh anytime you want!

While we know how important it is to laugh, sometimes it feels difficult or even impossible to feel lighthearted and uplifted. Here are a few suggestions to bring more laughter into your life and increase your happiness, boost your mood, and up your resilience.

Practice laughter yoga. Yes, this exists. Google it!

Prioritize humor. Having fun is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Watch funny movies, read a funny book, or hang out with your funniest friends. Just make sure you’re not laughing at the expense of others.

Smile more. Smiling is the gateway to laughter. It sounds simple, but let yourself loosen up and smile more. Fake it until you make it.
