The last quarter of 2018 wreaked havoc on much of California due to widespread fires throughout the state. Hundreds of thousands of acres have been burned and sadly, many people are missing. From just one fire alone, 85 people have been killed by fire and destruction, and 11 are still unaccounted for, even weeks after most of the fires have been contained. The California Fire Service estimates that there has been at least $2 billion in fire damage, and that number could get much higher as people return to survey the remains.
Firefighters have consistently been present, willing, and brave to fight for our home and our lives every step of the way. Night or day, windy or calm, these men and women have been risking their lives so that we don’t have to risk ours or lose our homes.
This holiday season is a perfect time for us to give what we can to the men and women that have given all they can to saving our lives and neighborhoods. As we enjoy the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s important that we don’t forget how hard firefighters have worked to make sure that a Christmas in California was possible for as many people as possible.
There are many ways to give back to firefighters this holiday season. The easiest way to give a financial gift is to visit www.cafirefoundation.org/support-us/. All donations are tax deductible and will be a tremendous help to the foundation as they work to provide scholarships for the children of fallen firefighters, commemorate heroes that have passed, and continue to provide aid for the victims of these most recent wildfires. No donation is too small.
Another great way to give back to firefighters this holiday season is to shop at one of the many stores and businesses participating in marketing campaigns affiliated with the Fire Foundation. Many shops are donating a large amount of earnings to the Foundation from now through the beginning of next year. For a full list of stores and businesses that are participating, visit www.cafirefoundation.org/support-us/other-ways-to-support-us/.
Finally, give back right from your laptop. By using GoodSearch as a shopping browser, money will be donated to the California Fire Foundation everytime you search for a new product. When you buy, a percentage of your purchase will be sent directly to the Foundation as well.
If you live near a fire station which actively hosts the firefighters who fought valiantly this year, or who had volunteers, you can bring gifts and supplies directly to the Engine House as well. Write a thank you card and let them know just how grateful you are for their bravery.
