Finding Ways to Channel Our Emotions

Finding Ways to Channel Our Emotions

We’re not always going to be happy.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise for most of us. What may come as a surprise, however, is that there are a number of ways we can channel our emotions into positive, productive actions. We don’t have to resign ourselves to merely dealing with unpleasant emotions and situations all the time. By learning to channel our emotions into activities that make us feel good and help us release stress and tension, we’re teaching ourselves that although we can’t always control our situations, we can control how we decide to deal with them.

Learning to be mindful of our thoughts, feelings, and emotions through modalities like embodied presence yoga plays a large role in helping us identify positive and negative emotions. Once identified, there are a number of unique and constructive ways we can channel our emotions into something positive.

  1. Workout: We learn about the connection between mind and body in treatment, and that connection is one that can only grow stronger through practice. High intensity workouts offer a great solution for working off stress, anger, or tensions that may come up in life.
  2. Journal your feelings: Writing down how we feel has its advantages in pretty much every situation, but it can be particularly useful when it comes to channeling negative emotions. Describing what we feel on paper can help us release, evaluate, and redirect our thoughts.
  3. Speak to a trusted friend: The power of communication can’t be stressed enough in recovery. Surrounding ourselves with the right people pays dividends when we need an ear to talk to and want to be sure that they can be trusted to help us decide on the right steps to take.
  4. Connect with nature: Many of the treatment modalities we offer here at Tree House revolve around nature, because of the healing effect nature tends to have on our minds and bodies. Taking a long walk in the park, or driving to a picturesque spot to just stop and sit can help us put things in perspective and turn those negative emotions into a relaxing bit of time.

Here at Tree House Recovery of Orange County, California, we don’t teach our clients to ignore negative emotions, or that negative emotions are bad.
