It’s in the Simple Things

In recovery, sometimes it’s the simplest things that can make the biggest difference.

Such is the case with taking just a moment to stop, smell the roses, and appreciate our surroundings. Here at Tree House Recovery, we believe that practicing mindfulness can be very effective in helping us find peace, serenity, and renewed direction, which is why we infuse the practice into almost every one of our treatment modalities.

Sometimes, when we’re confronted with environments or situations we’re not familiar with, or even just in the normal day to day of life, we can see ourselves move out of a place of control and confidence and into one of unsurety, doubt, and even anxiety. While this is normal for just about anyone, those of us in recovery can rely on mindfulness as a tool to help us accept what is out of our hands, and embrace what is right in front of us. Acknowledging and cherishing the simple things– things like the way the wind feels on our cheeks, how beautiful the day is, or how quiet our surroundings are– can help us recalibrate and refocus on the task at hand instead of working ourselves up over things that may have happened or will happen that were and are out of our control.

Here at Tree House, one of the regular ways we practice mindfulness and the art of appreciating the simple things is though a modality we call embodied presence yoga. As the name suggests, this modality teaches us how to become one with the here and now, comfortable in our own skin, and more present in our everyday lives. Active addiction disconnects us from ourselves, and can cause us to neglect life’s simple pleasures for the fleeting pleasures we may get from a substance. Through embodied presence yoga, we’re able to get reconnected.

Learning to appreciate the simple things also has benefits beyond peace, serenity, and direction. In fact, our embodied presence yoga modality has been shown to increase concentration and reduce anxiety and depression as well.

Sometimes, it’s the simple things that can make the biggest difference in recovery. Learning to appreciate them can help us stay on the right track.

Tree House Recovery of Orange County, California helps our clients learn to value the importance of life’s simple pleasures, and live in the present instead of worrying about situations that are out of their control. Through modalities that teach mindfulness and meditation, our men learn that even when they can’t control their situations, they can always control how they respond.
