The Moment of Waking: Techniques to Kickstart Your Day

Our first few hours awake are some of our most important, as they set the tone for the whole day. When we get into healthy and productive habits at the beginning of the day, we are more likely to continue on this positive road until our head hits the pillow at night. In this article, we will delve into some easy and effective techniques for maximizing your morning and getting your day started on the right foot.

Set an intention. Have you ever had the feeling that you just don’t know what you did with your day? We’ve all been there. This is where setting an intention comes in. Intentions act like guides throughout your day. You can keep checking in with your intention and ask yourself if you’re living in alignment with whatever you intended for your day. The tone of your intention can be playful and joyous, such as “I want to have fun today” or it can be more serious, like “I want to commit to my recovery 110%. What kind of day do you want to have? You have the power to decide.

Avoid your smartphone for the first 30 minutes of the morning. I know it sounds impossible. When we start our days by looking at our screens or scrolling through social media, we often lose the momentum and intentionality that the morning can offer. Try to take the first 20-30 minutes of your morning for meditation, intention-setting, or dwelling in that magical space after dreaming.

Practice gratitude. This is a perfect technique for setting a positive morning tone. When you wake up, before you even get out of bed, think of at least three things that you’re grateful for. Allow yourself to dwell in the space of gratitude for a few moments before beginning your day. Throughout the day, return to those three things when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
